The Spirit of Bayur Bay Herald

BBH born in the spirit to bring back the glory of Teluk Bayur Port, Padang City until the mid 19th century was a trade transit city that was even busier and bigger than Singapore. There was a number of factors at that time that made this city success, first was started with the gold mining activities and then continued with the production of Cement and Coal, making Padang bustling with the delivery of these goods. The second factor was when the Dutch made Teluk Bayur as a transit point on the Batavia route to Europe and vice versa. The third factor is due to the surrounding production of Spices, such as Cinnamon, Cloves and Nutmeg. The Dutch decision to changing this transit point to Singapore at the end of the 19th century had a major impact on the decline of Teluk Bayur Port.

Today's conditions are rather sad, Padang is still the largest city on the western coast of Sumatra, but it has left behind other cities within the island. There are two big ideas from BBH that will be our main highlight, firstly in the idea of restore the role of Teluk Bayur Port as a transit port. Ships from Surabaya, Jakarta, Australia and New Zealand who want to go to the Middle East and Europe can transit to Teluk Bayur, the main reason is it will shorten the route time and can avoid the hectic traffic and waiting times in Singapore and the Melaka Strait. This is task for the Regional and Central Governments to bring in Investors who want to increase the Port capacity and efficiency.

The second idea is to turn Padang back into a hub for the delivery of Sumatra produces, with the existing network of roads and railways being the good start. Sumatra today has developed rapidly into a Palm oil producing giant. Chocolate, Cinnamon, and more. Padang's strategic location will greatly benefit of this idea.

Urging from this spirit, BBH provides a variety of information, analysis, reports on investment opportunities in Padang and Sumatra in general. We hope that Padang and its Teluk Bayur Port can be bustling again and move forward with trading activities. BBH is happy to receive your feedback and suggestions, Our big wish to be a bridge between Stake Holders, Investors and the Market. (bbh/hawk)
